Squad Responsibilities By Class

  • This article is a quick-start and reference guide for players that want to know "What should I be doing?" during a basic infantry op.

Heavy Assault

  • You are the front line.
  • Cover the medics and engineers.
  • Enemy MAX units are your #1 kill priority.
  • Call out enemy movements as you see them - you should always have eyes on doors and windows.
  • Lashers are about the best weapon in the game for suppressing a choke point like a door.
  • Are you shooting the enemy? You should be.

Light Assault

  • You are the flank. Be the flank. Live the flank.
  • The only advantage that LAs have over other classes is their ability to quickly reposition with their jump jets.
  • Pick somewhere that's hard to reach and engage from there instead of on the ground with your non-LA squadmates.
  • Be ready to deploy a new squad beacon - this is your job more than anyone's. Roof, antenna, etc.
  • Are you shooting the enemy? You should be.

Medic

  • You are the primary support class. You carry us on your shoulders.
  • Medics are a force multiplier. 12 heavies can die only once each. 11 heavies with one medic have to be killed repeatedly.
  • Revive fallen comrades. Call out your revives verbally so the other medics don't double up and waste time and to let the person you are saving know to delay respawning. Rez nades + bandolier = win.
  • Heal damaged comrades. Call to them verbally so they don't waste a medkit.
  • Set up a shield bubble if you have one. Place it where the enemy can't easily shoot it and where allies can get cover while recharging.
  • Shoot the enemy in the face so that you won't need to heal or revive anyone.
  • Play cautiously. You are NOT the front line.

Engineer

  • You are logistics and suppression. Provide repairs, ammo, and covering fire.
  • Deploy ammo packs in safe and centrally-located positions.
  • Deploy your Spitfire or MANA AI turret - they can be used as cover or as suppressive fire machines.
  • Deploy your Tank Mines in areas where enemy Sunderers are likely to try and deploy.
  • Repair MAXes.
  • Are you shooting the enemy? You should be.
  • Play cautiously. You are NOT the front line.

Infiltrator

  • Unseen, you see all. Provide your friends with up-to-date info on enemy movements as much as you can.
  • Place Motion Spotter or Sensor Darts to provide radar for your comrades.
  • If necessary, go outside the engagement zone to scout.
  • Lay Proximity Mines near where groups of enemies will congregate or OUTSIDE doorways.
  • Never lay a Proximity Mine behind friendly lines; an enemy EMP grenade will detonate it and kill your friends.
  • Toss EMP grenades at groups of charging enemies or through doorways to detonate enemy deployables.
  • Are you shooting the enemy? You should be.

MAX

  • You are a tank. You are the front line. Body block for your friends, you can take it.
  • Protect your Engineer buddy.
  • Kill enemies, especially enemy MAXes.
  • Be aware of Sticky Grenades and AV grenades - they will stick to your body before detonating, and you don't want to blow up your friends.
  • Are you shooting the enemy? You should be.

Need feedback on the format and info in the article. The idea is a quick "checklist" style guide that shows you what you should be doing at any given time.

This is a rough first draft, I wanted to brain-dump the biggest ideas on paper before going to run errands.

Digging the article!

My edits are in italics.  Emboldened the section titles.  Bikeshed mode engaged!

may be you should add that infil are the bane of squad's beacon with EMP nades .

Agree so much on this. EMPs are insanely good for killing enemy beacons, because you don't have to get a LA on to the roof, tree, or radio tower where the beacon is placed, you just need an Infiltrator with a good arm.

For Engineer, I'd add that AT mines should be deployed if you expect a MAX crash from a given direction, but they're like Proximity mines in that if you put them down underneath your own guys, I'm going to yell at you. A lot.

From my admittedly poor experience/knowledge as infantry:

  • Move the "You are not the front line" way up to the top of the Medic and Engineer lists. Or at least to #3 (below the italics line) Maybe add "hang back, or bring up the rear."

  • I'd previously heard Robo say "Don't bother healing, only res" in a ServerSmash environment. Am guessing that doesn't apply in regular combat.

  • Engineer: "Deploy your prox mines around static defense areas such as friendly sundies, or in doorways your squad is too small to actively monitor themselves."

  • Engineer: "Repair MAXes and manned turrets during static defenses."

Do you think it'd be valuable to do a list like this for vehicles, as well? Stuff like "if you're a sunderer, you need to survive and deploy" and give target prioritization stuff for Mags, Lightnings, etc? Or it's pretty obvious because the vehicles have tighter roles?

Sure, sounds useful. We did something for WW a while back - prioritised target selection with a minimal list of recommended certs - but I've not seen one out of PG for a while. V covers the Valk on their own I think.

Worth a brainstorm. Let me post in the FEAR officer area and get it started.

For medics...

Keep your gun out as much as possible. No running around with your med gun out! Someone needs a heal? AOE heal. Only if it's very safe or a desperate situation should you use the med gun to heal.  Combo AOE Heal + Med gun if you can.

Getting healed by a medic? Your gun still works! Defend the medic!

About calling out heals though, I don't think I'd ever bother. Just coordinating revives is plenty of chatter already.
