Here's one of my favorite things to do solo, or with a small group. It's a very SHADES/PEST type thing, and you'll need a few certs to make it most effective. Good chances you'll fail too, but when it works, it's super fun. Really brings back some of those PS1 spec ops feelings, but at the faster pace of PS2. If you're looking to improve small squad communication, 1v1+ skills, exercise some different classes/skills or like trolling people over and over, this is a good "exercise" as well.
Pick a territory well behind enemy lines, at least 1-3 bases from the front. I like the "tower" bases for the variety of actions they propose, and I'll use it for this example. Adjust for other types of bases. Consider one near a warpgate or 3 way if you're really feeling that your inner Grandpa Vanu has found the ultimate disco swag.
Pull infiltrator with your favorite loadout, but make sure you can hack terms. Supressors help if you're into that kind of thing.
Quietly and quickly get to the territory you chose, here's 2 great ways to get there:
- Flash certed with stealth and scout radar. Hill climbing or speed boosts if you're into that. Avoid major routes, and stash your flash (rhymin' yall) inside of a building.
- Scythe certed with stealth, and scout radar, maybe swap scout radar if you have the balla status certs for ejection seat. Land/eject without dying and you'll probably want to decon your scythe. Flying either very high or very low is a good way to avoid detection.
If going in as a group, I suggest sneaking 1 person in, and using the spawn on squad leader ability.
Other vehicles could work, but I find these best.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SWEET CAMO ON EVERYTHING. SMEDLEYBUCKS ARE SATISFACTION.
While you're in transit, don't pick fights, and run if you need to.
Once you're at your chosen territory, quickly scout for any enemies. LISTEN. Are they spawning in, pulling air/tanks, manning any turrets? Note where and what is happening. I like to do this from a smaller building that has a good view of the main spawn/tower. AVOID CAP POINTS. We're not here to cap or be noticed.
Now here we have some decisions to make. We're going to want a way to respawn. Sundies are key, but beacons work too if you can hide it well. Start Hacking.
In towers, hack the lowest level vterm or weapon term. ONLY HACK ONE SO THEY DON'T BLOW UP THE OTHERS, SO YOU CAN HACK THOSE AGAIN.
Pull your bus. NOT JUST ANY BANGBUS. We want stealth so it does not immediately show up on radar. Deploy your bus.
BUT WHERE DO I DEPLOY STEEEEEVEEEE?
Depends, In the basement works, under some trees, under a bridge, or even a few hexes away. Just make sure it has cover and/or concealment. Baby sit it, but don't draw too much attention. If it's compromised you'll probably need to move it, and the game is likely up.
Now we really have some options/fun, since we can respawn, and hopefully without being spotted. If you do have to respawn, get away from the bus quickly and quietly, so they can't located it easily.
Here's a short list of suggested activities, get creative:
- Mine the teleporters and spawn exits with prox mines. Mine the vehicle areas or nearby roads with antitank mines. MINE THE AIRPADS WITH TANK MINES TO KILL AIR TANKS WHEN THEY LAND. Mines get you kills, deny chokepoints, and give your sneaky purple butt warning of enemies. Mine turrets that might be used.
- Hack turrets. Hack only one or two at a time unless you are with a group, or else they will just kill them. Use turrets on things.
- Pull burster maxes or nemesis HA and shoot passing/landing planes. Most passing planes won't expect you since you're a few territories deep in home turf.
- Pull HA or LA/C4 and blow up vehicles that are in the area.
- Pull a TANK (or if you have a group a TANK COLUMN). You can easily flank vehicles from an unexpected location.
- Remain a infil LA/ninja, and do ninja kills (great solo option). Works well if your bus is located/hidden a hex or two away.
- DROP SMOKE, BLAST TECHNO AN HAVE A LAZER RAVE TO SHOW THE GLORY OF VANU AND HIS SCIENCE
- DESTROY OBJECTIVES (shield gens, spawn gens), mine/snipe/kill the guys who come to fix it or, let them fix it, and blow it up again.
- If you have a group, spawn and hide something with SCOUT RADAR in the base to let you know when people are moving/spawning in. Flash works well for this, and can be hidden in strange places.
- Pull another sundaybuss and put it in a very dumb/obvious place. Let them kill it and think they got rid of you. Be quiet for a few minutes, rinse/repeat.
Once you've done this for a bit, the guys you kill will get mad. They we will come to kill you. Kill them, and keep killing them. OR DONT KILL THEM AND LET THEM THINK THEY KILLED YOU. Because you aren't hacking the base and taking points, you'll frequently only have 1-5 guys coming in at a time. They'll be over confident since they are on their own turf, but you'll have the drop on them with your mines, bus, hearing, communication and scout radar Keep farming them for fun. If an outfit/squad/platoon shows up, you'll probably die, but give yourself a pat on the back. You just made them respond to a base they already own for only a few people. Good stuff.
Sometimes while you're doing this, the front lines change, and you might have allies, or the third empire coming into your game. If the option comes to start capping the base, give it a shot. If greenies start spawning on your bus, they can ruin your surprise, but add to your forces. On more than one occasion this leads to your sunderer being the primary spawn for a new cap, and your actions of prepping the base will result in a very effective cap.
